How Often Should I Get an Oil Change for My Car?

Recommended Frequency for Getting Your Oil Changed

Oil changes are one of the most common and cheapest maintenance tasks drivers must have done for their vehicles. While you may understand its importance, it’s not always clear how often you should get an oil change for your car, especially when you hear so many different answers. Overall, it comes down a few factors – how long it is been since your last oil change, how many miles you logged since your last oil change, and what type of oil your vehicle is using.

Conventional vs Synthetic Oil

Before determining how long your vehicle can last before needing an oil change, you need to know which type of oil your vehicle takes. Most cars, especially those that are older, will run with conventional oil. Conventional oil is oil that is naturally found in the ground and is the cheapest option. Meanwhile, synthetic oil is man-made by scientists in a lab. Synthetic oil was crafted to last longer as it does not break down as easily and is cleaner for your engine but is more expensive to use. Since it is still relatively new, you will usually only see synthetic used in newer models.

How Long Does Conventional and Synthetic Oil Last?

If your vehicle is running on conventional oil, you should plan to change your oil after either 3,000 miles or 3 months, whichever comes first. Of course, many vehicles can go longer and still be fine, but don’t overdo it. Engine problems will eventually come if you don’t change your oil on time.

As mentioned before, synthetic oil lasts much longer than conventional. With synthetic, drivers should change their oil after 5,000-7,000 miles or 6 months.
