The Ford C-Max Hybrid is one of the newer hybrids on the market. And it is sure to be one of the more popular models as well thanks to 47 mpg combined fuel economy. When compared with the Toyota Prius, drivers have appreciated the better handling and acceleration of the Ford. And being a wagon, it is obviously more than just a traditional hybrid as it can carry a good amount of cargo.
The Volkswagen entry into the hybrid market provides one of the most comfortable rides among hybrid vehicles. And the fuel mileage of 42/48 is among the best in the market as well. The drive itself is what Volkswagen is known for, with responsive steering that puts it above the rest in pure performance. The Jetta Hybrid is a great choice in the hybrid market.
While technically listed as an electric vehicle, the Volt does also have a gas engine to pick up the slack when it runs out of charge. In this way, the Volt becomes one of the most efficient cars on the block. When in pure EV mode, the Volt is rated at 98 mpg-e and has a range of nearly 40 miles. Clearly, the Volt is the choice is you want pure efficiency, and it offers greater overall fuel economy than the Prius Hybrid.
The hybrid version of the Sonata fits in nicely in the midsize hybrid category. With mpg of 36/40, it beats out many members of the competition. But even greater than that might be the standard features offered on the Sonata Hybrid. By featuring Bluetooth, satellite radio and conveniences like push-button start and dual-zone climate control, the Sonata Hybrid slots in as a best buy.
Another electric vehicle on the market that should get consideration from consumers is the Ford Focus Electric. This car gets an impressive 110/99 mpg-e in city driving. These numbers give it far more electric range (76 miles) than the Toyota Prius. The Focus also offers more cabin space than many of the small hybrid competitors, making it a great choice for many.
With the Fusion Hybrid, Ford has created a vehicle that is a standout in the midsize hybrid market. In fact, the 47 mpg combined fuel economy is best-in-class for hybrid midsize vehicles. The four-cylinder engine with an electric motor also produces an impressive 188 horsepower. It also offers the style on the inside and out that the new Fusion has become known for.
Hybrid for the Layman
What is a hybrid vehicle and how does it work? We can all appreciate the advantages that hybrid vehicles provide; using less gas and being better for the environment. But how it all comes together is pretty interesting. Think of a hybrid vehicle essentially as an electric vehicle. It is equipped with an electric motor that provides power to the wheels. But in addition, there is also a small gasoline engine that powers a generator. This gasoline engine provides power for the vehicle at cruising speeds, while batteries kick in the extra power needed for acceleration. But since the gasoline engine only has output of 10 to 20 horsepower and runs at one speed, it is very efficient. Therefore, the car is great on fuel and less harmful to the environment.
Save Gas, Save the Environment
Hybrid vehicles have been joined in the market by electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles. While they all may work in mildly different ways, one thing is for sure – they use significantly less fuel than a traditional gas powered vehicle. In fact, the CO2 emissions on hybrid vehicles are nearly half of those from traditional gasoline powered vehicles. This means less money spent at the pump, and less emissions into the environment – a win-win.
