2017 Chevy Malibu Nine-Speed Transmission Advantages

What are some of the advantages of the new nine-speed automatic transmission that will be debuting on the 2017 Malibu? The new Hydra-Matic will offer significant fuel-efficiency advantages. It will come mated to the available 2.0-liter turbocharged engine available on the 2017 Chevy Malibu. With this powertrain combination, drivers of the Malibu should be able to enjoy up to 33 mpg on the highway according to EPA estimates. This is a 3 percent increase when compared to the 2016 Malibu with its eight-speed transmission.

Handling Improvements on the 2017 Malibu

Thanks to a wider overall gear ratio, the 2017 Chevy Malibu with the new nine-speed transmission should also be able to deliver premium handling, ranging from immediate acceleration to efficient highway driving.

“The smaller steps between the gears, compared to the eight-speed, enable smooth, almost imperceptible upshifts, for excellent refinement,” said Dan Nicholson, vice president, Global Propulsion Systems, in a recent Chevy press release. “No matter the engine torque or vehicle speed, the 9T50 is always in the perfect gear.”

Other Features of the Hydra-Matic Transmission

Some other unique features of the new nine-speed automatic transmission include:

  • Selectable one-way clutch – Suitable for holding torque or freewheeling, while reducing size demands
  • New torque converter technology
  • Electronically controlled capacity clutch (ECCC)
  • Stop-Start Functions – For increased city fuel efficiency
  • 32-bit transmission control module
